Casa Mariposa

Casa Mariposa

Architects Magnus worked with us to understand what we wanted- not always the same as what we said we wanted- and brought us a brilliantly authentic restoration of a classic mid-century modern, which had been buried with well-intentioned but unfaithful additions.

A Butterfly Takes Shape

When the homeowners invited us to their property, we looked beyond a 1980s addition to rediscover the home’s mid-century roots. Their vision for calm, understated luxury guided us, leading to a design centered on the original butterfly roof—a feature that inspired the name Casa Mariposa. By removing the busy addition and expanding the roofline, we created seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces where sunlight streams through open-air skylights.

The home’s neutral, earth-tone palette harmonizes with the vibrant hues of the surrounding landscape. Rainwater-collecting gardens, repurposed antique accents, and meandering paths—lined with rubble from the old tennis court—add layers of discovery and charm to the property.

Beyond transforming the exterior, we incorporated a deep energy retrofit to bring modern comfort while significantly reducing energy use. Casa Mariposa isn’t just a home; it’s a thoughtfully designed sanctuary that celebrates nature, sustainability, and true comfort—a place where living well takes center stage.
